About Christopher J. Behan

EDUCATION:

Christopher J. Behan has been practicing law for over 30 years and is a former Municipal Court Judge for the City of Newport, Rhode Island. He graduated from Providence College in 1980 with Honors and received his Juris Doctorate from Suffolk University Law School in Boston, Massachusetts in 1984. In addition to his private practice, he has for the past 16 years acted as Assistant City Solicitor and City Solicitor for the City of Newport.

  • He is a contributing author to "A Practical Guide to Divorce in Rhode Island" and has lectured for several legal and other organizations on domestic relations, labor and other legal issues.
  • He has appeared and practiced before the Federal and State Courts in Rhode Island as well as State and Municipal administrative bodies.
  • He has served as counsel for a number of governmental bodies including: The City of Newport, City of Providence, the Town of Middletown, the Town of Portsmouth School Committee, the former Newport Country Convention and Visitors Bureau (Discover Newport).
  • Served as an arbitrator for both private and Court annexed litigation and also has been frequently Court appointed as a Master, Guardian and Commissioner in civil litigation.
  • Past President of the Gallogly Rhode Island Family Law American Inn of Court.
  • Presently serves as the President of the Newport County Bar Association.
  • Chris presently serves as President of the Newport Rugby Football Club and has served as an officer and director on a number of community boards.
